Cybertraps Weekly Summary -- August 7, 2026

Last weekend, my wife Amy and I drove down to Philadelphia to spend some time with the estimable Dr. Troy Hutchings, NASDTEC's Senior Policy Advisor in Educator Ethics, and a long-time friend. We had a great time visiting the Pennsylvania Museum of Art (where Amy did extensive research on the noted American painter Thomas Eakins for her definitive work, Thomas Eakins: Art, Medicine, and Sexuality in Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia).

In the museum's collection is perhaps Eakins's greatest work, The Agnew Clinic (1889).

One of the things that is fascinating about this painting is that it is literally about surveillance ("to watch over") and who has permission to do so. When Eakins painted his homage to noted physician Dr. David Hayes Agnew, only men were permitted to take medical classes and become doctors at the Pennsylvania Medical School (in no small part, ironically, because of Dr. Agnew's vitriolic opposition to female medical students).

Who has access to information in our society persists as one of our great challenges and threats.

AI is reshaping both the cybertraps that educators face and the cases that state certification boards are investigating. This session, featuring NASDTEC's Catherine Slagle and Cybertraps legal expert Frederick Lane, examines the newest generation of "cybertraps": AI-powered edtech tools now embedded in classrooms, the rise of AI-generated deepfakes involving students and educators, and what these trends mean for educator discipline and licensure investigations. This week's docket reads less like a cybertraps roundup than a study in false identities. We've got detectives posing as teenagers, teachers posing as FBI agents, and activists posing as concerned citizens. Nearly everyone in this week's files is posing as someone else, with consequences ranging from prison sentences to $1 million defamation verdicts. In our digital era, the most reliable truth is that few things are what they seem to be.

Electronic Sexual Assault

US_Arizona – 5 August 2026: A disturbing photo posted to Reddit led a Cybertip with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which in turn led to an investigation by the Arizona Internet Crimes Against Children unit. Detectives determined that the photo had been posted by a charter school teacher in Goodyear. Forensic review of his devices turned up additional CSAM, some of which he obtained from the anonymous communication app Telegram.

Harassment

US_North Carolina – 6 August 2026: Middle Creek Elementary School in Apex, North Carolina recently hired a nonbinary teacher. The new teacher has been targeted in an online campaign led by Libs of TikTok, the far-right activist group founded by Chaya Raichik.

US_Virginia – 3 August 2026: A teacher targeted by the leader of conservative political action committee Virginia Project is sharing more than $1 million in damages for defamatory comments posted online. The teacher successfully proved that the allegations that he was a child sex predator had a material negative impact on his class enrollments and professional standing. Invasion of Student Privacy

England – 2 August 2026: A former teacher at City of London Academy, Islington avoided a permanent teaching ban despite sending "stupid" and "inappropriate" messages to teenage girls on WhatsApp and Snapchat.

Sexual Assault

US_Tennessee – 4 August 2026: A former Northeast High School teacher has been sentenced to 9 years in prison after pleading guilty to statutory rape. Prior to the assault, he persuaded the victim to engage in sexual activity on camera.

Solicitation

England – 31 July 2026: An experienced maths teacher received a suspended sentence and a 10-year stint on the Sex Offenders' Registry after being convicted of attempting to engage in sexual conversation with a 13-year-old girl on Chatiw, a free chatroom service. However, the individual in question was actually an undercover police officer.

US_Florida – 31 July 2026: A high school geometry teacher in the Osceola School District thought that he was chatting online with a 14-year-old girl. His attempt to lure her to a sexual encounter came to a crashing halt when he was arrested by the detective with whom he was actually chatting.

US_Rhode Island – 4 August 2026: A Rhode Island teacher and athletics coach at Barrington Christian Academy is facing multiple criminal charges for allegedly impersonating an FBI agent and soliciting partially-nude photos from a 14-year-old girl. According to an investigative affidavit attached to the complaint, the teacher used multiple messaging platforms to communicate with the girl, during which he persuaded her that providing the nude photographs was part of an "FBI training program."

Threats

Phillipines – 6 August 2026: A teacher in the town of Iloilo was involved in a dispute with a female teacher at the same school, and posted threatening online messages that scared faculty, parents, and staff. In response, the school switched to Alternative Delivery Mode of instruction until police could investigate.

US_Illinois – 3 August 2026: After a student closed her laptop during class, which accidentally deleted her lesson plan, a 22-year-old student teacher John L. Hensey Elementary in Washington, Illinois sent a "private" Snapchat message to three friends. In her message, she joked about shooting the student and/or the school. 60 minutes later, she was arrested by local law enforcement, who received a tip from the FBI. She spent a night in jail and of course, lost her student teacher placement. The case raises questions about the level of access online messaging companies have to allegedly private chats.
