Cybertraps Weekly Summary -- August 11, 2026

It's been a quiet week here in Lake Wobegon, or its South Fork equivalent (the lovely town of East Hampton). I've mostly been holed up in the East Hampton Library, doing my best to load up the newsletter queue for my upcoming trip.

The one non-library highlight was an evening at The Church in Sag Harbor to see a performance of Sons of Town Hall, a two-person group that leans hard into Victorian-era vagabond costumes and sea-shanty balladry. The Philadelphia Inquirer pinned it best: "Think Simon & Garfunkel lost at sea."

It was a fun performance. They apparently have a highly-regarded podcast, which I plan to download at some point. But now, on to more serious matters.

This week's headline dive runs unusually deep into failure-to-report territory: a school board president now facing charges alongside the teachers he was supposed to be overseeing, and a former principal accused of hiring around a known history rather than reporting it. Kentucky's new anti-grooming statute claims its first defendant, and an Iowa coach's license surrender offers a reminder that "confidential resignation" and "no charges filed" are not the same thing as "nothing happened."

Electronic Sexual Assault

US_Florida – 7 August 2026: An online investigation into distribution of child sex abuse materials (CSAM) led to the arrest of a science teacher at Success Academy in Fort Myers, FL. Law enforcement officials traced the Internet Protocol address associated with the files and obtained a search warrant for the teacher's home. Additional images of CSAM and bestiality were located on external hard drives in his residence.

US_Ohio – 7 August 2026: Another day, another sting by an undercover cop. A career tech teacher at Stebbins High School was nabbed during an investigation by Miami Valley Human Trafficking Task Force and charged with disseminating harmful material to a minor.

Failure to Report

US_Texas – 7 August 2026: A complicated and widespread sex scandal in the Winnsboro Independent School District has resulted in yet another arrest: the president of the Winnsboro ISD school board, who is now facing charges for failure to report child abuse and tampering with evidence. Over the past year, Texas law enforcement has arrested two teachers and two superintendents for their roles in the scandal.

US_Texas – 6 August 2026: A former principal at Fornay ISD elementary school was arrested after phone records and emails revealed that she recommended hiring a special education teacher, despite knowing of his earlier trial for indecency with a child and his subsequent name change. The teacher was arrested in April and was charged with inappropriately touching a Fornay ISD student.

Inappropriate Relationship with Student

US_Texas – 7 August 2026: School got off to a bad start for a 37-year-old math teacher at Weatherford High School, who was arrested for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to a 17-year-old male student during the summer break. If convicted, he faces between 2 and 20 years in prison.

Indecent Exposure

US_New York – 6 August 2026: The Special Commissioner of Investigation for the New York City School District issued a finding that a Brooklyn teacher had indecently exposed himself to parents during a Zoom meeting in 2024. The educator was fired and the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.

Sexual Assault

England – 7 August 2026: A former secondary school teacher in Lancashire, UK, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for grooming and sexually assaulting a teenage girl. During the investigation, police recovered four different mobile phones used to communicate with the victim, and more than 700 "messages of a sexual nature" between the two.

US_Kansas – 29 July 2026: A special education teacher for West Elk USD is facing multiple criminal charges stemming from an alleged assault on a student, including the use of Snapchat to solicit sexual activity with the teen.

Solicitation

US_Iowa – 7 August 2026: A North Linn teacher and baseball coach agreed to surrender his state license, thereby preventing the details of his alleged ethical violations from being made public. One alleged ethical violation was based on a "romantic or otherwise inappropriate relationship" with a student, but a state investigation did not result in any charges. The surrender of his license will be reported to the Clearing House of the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, which tracks teacher licensure actions around the country.

US_Kentucky – 9 August 2026: A teacher at Graves County Middle School is one of the first to be charged under a new Kentucky law aimed at cutting down the number of incidents of grooming. School administrators reported a possible grooming incident to the Graves County Sheriff's Office; after reviewing electronic records and conducting forensic interviews, detectives arrested the teacher.

Articles Worth Reading

AI is the focus of much of this week's reading list. An AI private school, AI agents sitting through entire online courses on students' behalf, and Denmark's answer: put the student back in a room and make them explain their own work out loud. A Postcard Postscript

When I was a child, my grandparents (who were inveterate collectors of a wide range of objects, from stamps and fishing books to glass paperweights) introduced me to the hobby of postcard collecting. That was 50+ years ago, and in the interval, I've accumulated somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 postcards. (One of my goals for the next few years is to actually count them.)

Many of the postcards are from various members of the family, and my main plan is to create an online library to share with other family members. But as a nod to Paul Krugman's musical coda, I'm going to try to add a postcard postscript to my blog posts, just for fun. The themes will vary, but will primarily focus on Boston (my home town), New York/Brooklyn (where I live), Teddy Roosevelt, Amherst College, and baseball (my favorite sport).
