New on The Cybertraps Newsletter
This week's posts concentrate on the challenges raised by both established and emerging technologies in the classroom. The ethical debate over student use of personal devices may be more nuanced than first thought; the debate over smart glasses should be very short.

And Now for Something Completely Different
If you are a fan of romance and weddings, here's a website you should check out: Not a Wedding Crasher. For as little as $30, you can fill an otherwise-empty seat at the wedding of people you don't know. According to the New York Post, the site was launched by a bridal bouquet-loving couple from San Diego. It's a fun idea that hasn't exactly caught on yet (there are just five upcoming weddings listed on the site), but it's a fun idea. If you know someone who's getting married, pass it on.
From the Cybertraps Files
Reports of educator sexual misconduct dominate this week's files, with arrests and investigations in Indiana, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Japan. There are also important insights into risks for student safety: a South Texas case highlights the growing threat of AI-generated child sexual abuse material sourced from school social media photos, while viral graduation brawls in California underscore how quickly student behavior can become a public relations crisis.

Screen time and AI governance are the week's dominant policy threads, with legislative and regulatory action percolating at the state, district, and federal levels. The legal pressure on social media platforms continues to intensify, with school-based lawsuits multiplying and a $27 million settlement (in Kentucky) signaling that courts are becoming an increasingly viable accountability mechanism for the harms caused by social media alogorithms. The 2026 Consortium of School Networking State of EdTech report (embedded below) provides useful empirical grounding for both debates.
