❤️‍🩹 Mental Health and Cybertraps

In my research into the various cybertraps that snare teachers (and students), one of the most common elements is a mental health challenge of one kind or another. They can taken myriad forms – depression, loneliness, bullying, alienation, negative body image, etc., and stem from a variety of causes. Regardless of how they arise, however, mental health issues can create vulnerabilities that can lead to self-destructive decisions or exploitation by others.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, making it a great opportunity to reflect on how your school or district promotes the well-being of students, teachers, and administrators. By fostering mental health awareness and support within K-12 schools, we can create a more resilient and successful educational community that thrives on empathy, understanding, and inclusivity.

There are two key elements for improving mental health in schools. First, educators need the training necessary to identify possible mental health issues in their students. Second, districts and schools need the resources necessary to provide support for students facing mental health challenges. In the absence of those resources, or in an excess of empathy, teachers may be tempted to offer aid to a student that they are not trained to provide, situations which far too often turn into a cybertrap for all involved.
