I had a somewhat less productive week, in large part because I spent all day Wednesday having half of my thyroid removed by the excellent surgical team at Weill Cornell in Manhattan. Everything seems fine, but it certainly has been a bit distracting.

The issues raised by emerging technologies, however, do not take a break. This week's substantive post examines whether it is ethical for schools to post student and staff photos on publicly-accessible social media. I think not.

Some Articles of Interest

AI governance in K–12 education is moving faster at the state level than in Congress, with new procurement guardrail proposals, a surge in state legislation, and a Senate HELP Committee hearing on AI's educational impact scheduled for June 16. The policy gap between actual AI use in schools and formal district policies — documented this week by Government Technology — is widening, and the pressure to close it is building from multiple directions simultaneously.

The dominant international story is the United Kingdom's proposed ban on social media for users under 16, with supporters framing it as liberating children from algorithmic harm while critics warn that effective age verification necessarily expands surveillance infrastructure.
